MAKEUP REVIEW: Three Things I Learned by Doing NYX’s Lippie Countdown Advent Calendar

I’ve always had an slight obsession with lipstick.

What can I say? Having thick, full lips makes it easy.

So it wasn’t a surprise when NYX’s Lippie Countdown Advent Calendar caught my eye early last November after it appeared in a video on the INSIDER Beauty Facebook page. I’ve never done any sort of advent calendar before and since I’ve been steadily growing my makeup collection (and skills), it seemed to be a great choice.

So here are three things I learned from my experience:

It was an AMAZING deal for what I got.

NYX’s Lippie Countdown Advent Calendar included 24 lipsticks total, one for each day, in this cute little case.

In total, this set had four matte lipsticks, three liquid suedes, two “simply” crayons, four lip lingeries, three butter lipsticks, three soft matte lip cremes, two intense butter glosses, and three butter glosses.

Here’s a breakdown by day, type and color, with each entry linking to my daily selfie:

  1. Matte Lipstick in “Eden”
  2. Liquid Suede in “Soft-Spoken”
  3. Simply Vamp in “She Devil”
  4. Lip Lingerie in “Push Up”
  5. Soft Matt Lip Creme in “Paris”
  6. Butter Lipstick in “Seashell”
  7. Intense Butter Gloss in “Berry Strudel”
  8. Butter Gloss in “Crème Brûlée”
  9. Matte Lipstick in “Up The Bass”
  10. Lip Lingerie in “Corset”
  11. Soft Matte Lip Creme in “Sāo Paulo”
  12. Matte Lipstick in “Indie Flick”
  13. Liquid Suede in “Vintage”
  14. Butter Lipstick in “Root Beer Float”
  15. Butter Gloss in “Raspberry Tart”
  16. Lip Lingerie in “Embellishment”
  17. Simply Red Lip Cream in “Russian Red”
  18. Liquid Suede in “Stone Fox”
  19. Soft Matte Lip Creme in “Copenhagen”
  20. Matte Lipstick in “Shocking Pink”
  21. Lip Lingerie in “Exotic”
  22. Intense Butter Gloss in “Tres Leches”
  23. Butter Gloss in “Sugar Cookie”
  24. Butter Lipstick in “Ripe Berry”

Originally priced at $65, I snagged this product for just under $30 during NYX’s Black Friday sale on their website (SCORE!). But even at $65, the amount of product I used and ended up keeping after December was well worth it.

I now have a full makeup bag of lippie minis, which will likely last me until the next holiday season. Here’s to hoping NYX decides to roll out another advent calendar with fresh lip colors!

I can pull off a lot of colors, but bright and sassy is my thing.

I ended up keeping A LOT of the samples from this calendar, but some colors were obviously better than others.

My favorite five were:

  • Matte Lipstick in “Eden”
  • Intense Butter Gloss in “Berry Strudel”
  • Butter Gloss in “Crème Brûlée”
  • Lip Lingerie in “Embellishment”
  • Matte Lipstick in “Shocking Pink”

The ones I ended up tossing were:

  • Simply Vamp in “She Devil”
  • Lip Lingerie in “Push Up”
  • Matte Lipstick in “Up The Bass”
  • Lip Lingerie in “Corset”
  • Liquid Suede in “Vintage”
  • Liquid Suede in “Stone Fox”

Overall, the brighter colors like red, pink and purple looked better on me and I loved the butter glosses. The more nude/neutral and super dark colors didn’t match all that well with my skin tone, in my opinion, and didn’t really fit my style.

Also, while most of these lines were great for my lips, the Liquid Suede line wreaked havoc. It made my lips extremely dry and I had to reapply multiple times throughout the day. I’m not sure if a regular-sized item in this line would be any better, either.

Taking selfies with glasses and natural light is difficult.

I’ve only had glasses for about five years and I tend not to ride on the selfie train so when I had to experiment taking selfies every single day… let’s just say it was a little exhausting.

Relying on natural light was key most of the time, — unless I was in my bathroom… those lights are ah-maz-zing! — but my glasses always gave off a glare. So it took some maneuvering to get the right position and sometimes, it still didn’t work.

But taking selfies every day was surprisingly invigorating. I habitually did my makeup, posted to social media and felt part of the larger makeup enthusiast community.

Plus, family, friends and others online regularly gave feedback on colors they liked or didn’t like. It was fun to see them get involved and express anticipation for the next color.

All in all, this NYX lippie calendar is a solid investment if you’re looking to try a wide variety of products, simply sample some new colors or start building your own lippie collection. Even though December is long gone, you can still purchase NYX’s lippie countdown calendar for $32.50 and have some fun with a variety of lip colors.
